The practice

We take fewer matters than we are offered. That is the point. The file gets read. The other side knows it.

Selected work

Four desks. One standard.

Commercial litigation

Commercial litigation

Contracts, shareholder fights, the cases that decide a company.

Private counsel

Private counsel

A second brain for owners who already have a generalist.

Fiduciary and estates

Fiduciary & estates

Families, trusts, the work that has to last longer than the argument.

Investigations

Investigations

Internal reviews. Quiet, complete, and written so a board can act.

Retain

Some matters only exist once.

We do not take every fight. If we take yours, it is because we can finish it.

How the firm runs

Four rules. No brochure language.

01

Read the file.

If we have not sat with the papers, we do not have an opinion yet. Strategy comes after that, not before.

02

Write it down.

Advice that cannot survive a letter is not advice. Clients leave with something they can act on.

03

One partner, not a bench.

You do not get handed down. The name on the letter is the person who will stand up.

04

Decline is a service.

If we are the wrong firm, we say so. That is cheaper than discovering it in month six.

About

A small firm that still does the long work.

Hart & Vale opened in 1998 as two desks and a borrowed conference room. It is still small on purpose. We take commercial fights, private counsel, and the family matters that need a grown-up in the room.

Chicago and Cleveland. We travel when the file requires it. We do not advertise a national footprint we do not staff.

The practice Chambers

A matter

How a file starts.

01

Listen

A first conversation. No engagement letter until we know what you actually have.

02

Read

The papers, the emails, the thing nobody wanted to put in writing. Then a view.

03

Decide

Fight, settle, or wait. Written so you can take it to a board or a kitchen table.

04

Finish

We stay until the last filing or the last signature. Then the file closes.
